stitching love into every blanket: supporting fostering through kindness

Fostering is about creating comfort and security during uncertain times. Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can make the biggest difference.

When a baby or young child enters care, they often arrive with very few belongings of their own.

At a time of change, something as simple as a soft blanket can bring comfort, warmth and reassurance.

Thanks to Jean, many of our youngest children have received exactly that.

Jean attends the Church of the Nazarene in Llay and has a wonderful talent for crocheting.

After a conversation about fostering, she decided to use her creativity to support children coming into care in the most practical and heartfelt way.

She has since lovingly crocheted dozens of blankets for babies and young children.

Each one is made to be kept by the child and to move with them — whether that’s to a longer-term foster home or to their forever family through adoption.

jean’s story: why fostering matters to me

Jean explained why helping children in foster care means so much to her:

“I was adopted many years ago and was blessed with a wonderful adoptive family. Even so, my heart has always gone out to children who can no longer live with their birth families. When I heard how little some children arrive with, I wanted to do something practical. Crocheting is something I love to do, so making blankets felt like a way to show each child that someone cares.”

cath, one of our foster carers, added:

“Jean is a wonderful lady with a real gift. When I explained that some children come into care with very few personal belongings, she immediately wanted to help. The children who have stayed with us have all benefited from receiving these beautiful blankets, made with love especially for them. It’s such a simple thing, but it means so much.”

thank you, jean

As the local authority fostering service, we see first-hand the impact of community kindness.

Jean’s blankets are more than just yarn and stitching — they are comfort during uncertainty, warmth during change, and a reminder that each child matters.

Jean, thank you for sharing your time, your skill and your compassion.

Your generosity is helping children feel safe, valued and remembered at a time when they need it most.

could you offer a local child a safe and loving home?

Jean’s kindness shows that everyone can make a difference in a child’s life.

For some, that difference comes through crocheting blankets. For others, it comes through opening their home.
